What is the difference between Cordyceps Militaris & Cordyceps Sinensis?

Oct 04, 2022

You must have come across supplements saying they are made from Cordyceps Militaris & Cordyceps Sinensis. What is the difference between the two? Which one is better? Let’s find out!

Cordyceps mushrooms include over 400 different species and are parasitic fungi. They grow all around the globe in countries such as the United States, India, China, Japan, Australia, Peru, Bolivia, and many more. Cordyceps mushrooms are known to typically infect insects and arthropods, with every type of Cordyceps infecting a very specific bug.

Cordyceps begins its life cycle with Cordyceps spores landing on the insect. The spore then germinates, and small thread-like filaments known as hyphae will begin to grow inside the insect and turn into mycelium that continues to consume the insect from inside. The mycelium is the fungi’s root-like structure that develops into a mushroom.

When the fungal mycelium fully consumes the particular insect and the surroundings are accurate, a blade-like mushroom which is known as a fruiting body is produced from the insect’s head. Spores are then released from spores and the life cycle starts over.

What’s the difference between two cordyceps?

  1. Introduction

Cordyceps Sinensis is known to be the most famous and expensive fungus. It is expensive because it is rarely found and is not easily grown to form a stroma or fruiting body in the laboratory. However, on the other hand, Cordyceps Militaris is the most successful commercially or laboratory cultivated species in an artificial environment.

  1. History and Background

Cordyceps Sinensis is a very popular species. However, modern science and technology have now uncovered potentially valuable species such as cordyceps militaris. Cordyceps Militaris have similar or sometimes even greater concentrations of medicinal compounds than most of its counterparts.

  1. Research

Several studies have found that Cordyceps Sinensis is decreasing because of over-collection. The reason why these types of cordyceps are pretty expensive is because of their counterfeit materials including cultured products that are sold in the market. Cordyceps Militaris is usually viewed as a substitute for the former cordyceps due to its similar chemical and medicinal properties.

  1. Active Compounds

Both Cordyceps Militaris and Cordyceps Sinensis are known to have the three most valuable chemical compounds that are Cordycepin, Adenosine, and Beta-glucans apart from more than a dozen of other extremely beneficial chemicals.

Cordyceps is a clinically proven natural healer for your body's overall health. Not only does it boost your immune system, it is also known to support a healthy heart, kidney and respiratory system. Along with physical health, it has a positive effect on your mental health too.
